Earthing, also referred to as grounding, is an age-old practice that involves connecting your body, mind and spirit to the planet. You can practice earthing by standing barefoot or laying in the grass—anything that allows your body to connect directly with the earth.
Over time, humans have had less and less interaction with the outdoors and direct contact with the earth. We wear synthetic shoes that insulate us from the earth's grounding benefits. While life has gotten more comfortable, over the past 50 years chronic diseases, immune disorders and inflammation in the body have increased. Some research suggests that a lack of grounding could correlate with our decline in health.
According to the National Institutes of Health, earthing can improve sleep, decrease stress and improve well-being. Research supports earthing as an essential element for boosting your overall health and wellness.
It important to have a regular earthing routine to reap the full benefits with a recommended amount of 30 to 120 minutes daily.
Grounding is thought to reduce inflammation by helping to balance the body's electrical charge and neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause damage to cells and contribute to inflammation. By reducing inflammation, earthing may have implications for a range of health conditions, including arthritis and cardiovascular disease.
There are five popular grounding techniques that you can incorporate into your daily routine:
Walking Barefoot: One of the simplest and most effective grounding techniques is to walk barefoot on natural surfaces such as grass, sand, or dirt.
Sitting or Laying Down on the Ground: Sitting or laying down on the ground, such as on a park bench or patch of grass, can help to ground the body.
Touching Metal Objects: Touching metal objects, such as a copper bracelet, metal bed frame or metal pipes, can help ground the body. This is because metal is a good conductor of electricity.
Taking a Shower: As long as the water is not insulated from the earth, taking a shower can help ground the body. This is because the water in the shower conducts electrical charges from the body to the earth.
A grounding sheet is a sheet made of conductive material that allow your body to directly connect with the earth's natural energy. Grounding sheets work by allowing electrons from the earth to flow into your body, which helps to balance your body's natural electrical charge.
